Meet Rhys Bowen
Venue: The Sedona Public Library
Friday, November 7, 6 pm: Meet bestselling
NorCal, and native Brit, Rhys Bowen.
Rhys is the hugely-popular, award-winning author of the Her Royal
Spyness and Molly Murphy mystery series.
Born in Bath, England, of a Welsh-English family, Rhys Bowen's first
job was with the BBC in London, specializing in drama and becoming
a studio manager. She also started writing her own radio and TV plays.
Needing to escape from the dreary London weather, she accepted an
invitation to work for Australian Broadcasting in Sydney. While Down
Under she met her future husband John, who was on his way to California.
She married and settled in the San Francisco area, where she has lived
ever since, raising four children.
After a stint of writing children's and YA books, Rhys turned to adult
mysteries, beginning with the Welsh Constable Evans novels. The second
book, EVAN HELP US, was called “a jewel of a story” by
Publisher's Weekly and nominated for a Barry Award. EVAN'S GATE received
an Edgar nomination.
Wanting to try her hand at something different and edgier, Rhys conceived
Molly Murphy—a brash, fearless Irishwoman who struggles to survive
as an immigrant in New York City. The first book in this series,
MURPHY'S LAW, won three awards including the Agatha. Every
subsequent book has received starred reviews and award nominations.
FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE won the Anthony
Award at the world mystery convention.
In 2007 Rhys decided there was enough darkness in the world and began
a new and very different series. It features a minor royal in depression-era
London. She's 34th in line to the throne but she is penniless and
trying to survive on her own. Not easy for a girl who doesn't even
know how to boil water. The first book in the series, HER
ROYAL SPYNESS, was a resounding success. Booklist called it,
"a smashing romp." Jacqueline Winspear, author of The Maisie
Dobbs Mystery Series, wrote: With echoes of Gosford Park and Snobs,
Rhys Bowen has crafted an insightful blend of old-fashioned whodunnit,
clever satire and drawing room comedy of errors—and created
a feisty new heroine to delight a legion of Anglophile readers. I’m
sure the British royal family will take more than a little interest
in the exploits of their long-lost cousin, Her Royal Spyness, Lady
Georgiana Rannoch!”A ROYAL PAIN,
the second in the series, just debuted. If you liked Bridget Jones...If
you adore royal scandals...If you loved Charade and a touch of danger...A
sexy hero who is not quite trustworthy...And you love to laugh...Then
you’ll love HER ROYAL SPYNESS.
When not writing Rhys loves to travel, sing, hike, play her Celtic
harp and entertaining her grandchildren. |

Cowboy Biography:
The True Story of the Rodeo Riding
Venue: The Well Red Coyote
Saturday, November 8, 2 pm: The drama and
energy of the rodeo life — have you ever wondered what it
would be like? Join Margot Kahn, author
of HORSES THAT BUCK, biographer of
“Cody” Bill Smith for the
real scoop. When asked in an interview what he most liked about
rodeo, three-time world champion saddle-bronc rider Smith said simply,
“Horses that buck.” He redefined the image of America’s
iconic cowboy. Determined as a boy to escape a miner’s life
in Montana, he fantasized a life in rodeo and went on to earn thirteen
trips to the national finals, becoming one of the greatest of all
riders.
HORSES THAT BUCK: THE STORY OF CHAMPION BRONC RIDER BILL SMITH
truly captures the rodeo life from the back of a bucking bronco.
It puts readers in the saddle to experience the life of a champion
rider in his quest for the gold buckle. Drawing on interviews with
Smith and his family and friends, Margot Kahn recreates the days
in the late 1960s and early 1970s when rodeo first became a major
sports enterprise. She captures the realities of that world: winning
enough money to get to the next competition, and competing even
when in pain. She also tells how, in his career’s second phase,
Smith married cowgirl Carole O’Rourke and went into business
raising horses, gaining notoriety for his gentle hand with animals
and winning acclaim for his and Carole’s Circle 7 brand.
Inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 and the National
Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame
in 2000, Smith was a legend in his own time. His story is a genuine
slice of rodeo life—a life of magic for those good enough
to win. This book will delight rodeo and cowboy enthusiasts alike.
The Seattle-Post Intelligencer writes: "...a
marvelously told biography of Bill Smith, the Montana native who
became a long-running champion rodeo bronc rider. (Kahn's) meticulous
effort pays real dividends." Larry Mahan, six-time World Champion
All-Around cowboy writes: "The most beautifully written rodeo
or human story I have ever read."
Margot has worked professionally as a journalist, editor, speechwriter,
and arts administrator. She is currently the youth programs manager
at Richard Hugo House, a literary arts center in Seattle, and a
writer-in-residence with the Seattle Arts & Lectures program
Writers in the Schools. |

Dynamite Writing Workshop:
"Knee Deep in Blood and Guts: how the FBI profiling unit operates...and
the secrets of getting published."
Venue: The Well Red Coyote
Wednesday, November 12, 7 pm: NY Times
bestselling thriller author, Alan Jacobson,
author of THE 7TH VICTIM, will not only
cover some of the FBI profiling research he did for his new book,
he will then move into "the secrets of getting published."
Whether you want to know more about FBI profiling or to hear the secrets
of getting published from someone who made it all the way to the top
— this is a not-to-be-missed writing workshop.
In THE 7TH VICTIM, The Dead Eyes Killer
lurks in the backyard of the famed FBI Profiling Unit. His brutal
murders confound the local task force, despite the gifted profiling
skills of Special Agent Karen Vail. But along with Vail’s insight
and expertise comes considerable personal and professional baggage.
On leave pending a review of her assault on her abusive ex-husband,
Vail must battle forces determined to bring her down, as she fights
to find Dead Eyes before he murders more young women. But the seventh
victim is the key to all that stirs this killer...the key that will
unlock secrets perhaps too painful for Vail to bear. These are secrets
that threaten to destroy her, secrets that will bring down her storied
career. For Karen Vail, the truth rests at the heart of a lie. And
uncovering it could get her killed...
THE 7th VICTIM is a page-turner as only
Alan Jacobson can write, with a stunning
twist of an ending that will satisfy even the most discerning thriller
reader.
Other bestselling authors rave about THE 7TH
VICTIM. James Patterson writes: ""Karen Vail is as
compelling a character as any created by Patricia Cornwell, or yours
truly. The 7th Victim is packed with neat surprises." James Rollins
says: "Tautly written and brilliantly executed…a masterpiece.”
And Tess Gerritsen writes: " "Karen Vail is a knockout,
tough and brilliant…. The twists and turns will astonish you."
And, from Robert Ressler, world renowned FBI profiler (ret), founder
of VICAP, and "father" of serial killer research: “As
one of the founding fathers of the FBI profiling unit, I can unequivocally
state that THE 7TH VICTIM sets a new
standard for serial killer novels. With meticulous research and dead-on
accuracy, Alan Jacobson has not only written a gripping, twisting
thriller, he's created a must-read book.” |

Geology Talk: Tracing
the Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau
Venue: The Well Red Coyote
Saturday, November 15, 2 pm: Join geologists
Wayne Ranney and Ron
Blakey for the Sedona debut of their new book, TRACING
THE ANCIENT LANDSCAPES OF THE COLORADO PLATEAU.
The beautifully stratified rocks of the Colorado Plateau tell a fascinating
story of our ever evolving landscape. Although the plateau is uplifted
today and is actively eroding, many former landscapes were near sea
level and include tropical shallow seas; sandy, windblown deserts;
and Amazon scale river systems that flowed from as far away as the
Appalachian Mountains. Each of these former landscapes left behind
sediment that allows geologists to know past environments and although
no one was present to witness them firsthand, the rocks preserve evidence
of their former presence. These long lost scenes come to life in a
series of dynamic and newly created paleogeographic maps. Developed
by "reading the rocks," they take us on an incredible journey
as we travel through time on the Colorado Plateau.
Ron Blakey is a native of the Chicago-Milwaukee
area who was drawn to the red rocks and canyons of the Southwest at
a young age. Ron received a bachelor’s degree in geology at
the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree at the University
of Utah, and a doctorate at the University of Iowa. For his doctoral
research, he studied the widespread Triassic Moenkopi Formation across
most of southeastern Utah. In the years since, he has studied nearly
every Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rock unit on the
Colorado Plateau. He has taught geology at Northern Arizona University
in Flagstaff for more than thirty years.
After a three-year tour of duty as a backcountry ranger at Grand Canyon
National Park in the 1970s, Wayne Ranney
felt inspired to pursue his bachelor’s and master’s in
geology at Northern Arizona University, where he took several of Ron
Blakey’s classes. Today, Wayne works as a geology interpreter
and trail guide for organizations such as the Smithsonian, the Museum
of Northern Arizona, and the Grand Canyon Field Institute, and he
teaches courses in southwestern geology at Coconino Community College
in Flagstaff. He also works as a shipboard geology interpreter, teaching
groups in such far-flung places as the Arctic, the Amazon, Africa,
and Antarctica. Wayne Ranney is the author of CARVING
GRAND CANYON and several other books about the geology of the
Southwest, and he is a contributing writer for Sedona Magazine. |

The Affluent Artist:
A Financial Workshop for Artists
Venue: The Well Red Coyote
Saturday, October 22, 2 pm:
Creative People ARE different. If you have dedicated your career to
following your passion, to being “creative” there is a
good chance that some of the money stuff has escaped you, says Rick
DiBiasio, author of THE AFFLUENT ARTIST:
HOW CREATIVE COULD YOU BE IF MONEY WASN’T AN ISSUE?
Maybe it’s a matter of time, lack of interest or feeling like
you are not wired to handle financial decisions but it’s time
to release all that, Rick insists. Allowing money and abundance into
your life will make you a better artist, when you recognize that money
is an ally you’ll have gained another tool to help you create.
After 25 years as a successful Wall Street guy, if there’s one
romantic concept Rick DiBiasio would
like to see abolished, it’s the idea of the “starving
artist.” Join us for Rich’s workshop, “The Affluent
Artist: Using the Law of Attraction to Bring Money Into Your Life,”
which will address: * Why the starving artist model is obsolete; *
How to Attract Abundance, and * Doing 5 Things a Day Towards Your
Goals
Artists and creative people are allowed to prosper financially. Rick's
experience working with successful creative people can help you release
limiting beliefs and allow you to use money as another color on your
palette. How creative could YOU be if money wasn't an issue? Rick's
workshop will work with goal setting, visualization and taking action
to allow your inner artist to come out and play! |
