Writing Workshop & Writing Exercise: How to Make History Come Alive

Saturday, November 7, 2 pm: When writing historical fiction, it requires more than just knowing dates and places. The minutiae, the smells, sounds, feel of the era must come alive for you or they won’t come alive for your readers. Join award-nominated author, Jeri Westerson, author of VEIL OF LIES and the forthcoming SERPENT IN THE THORNS, and explore the tactile approach of learning about an era that she uses to write her own explosively successful novels. Jeri will show you how to delve into your own psyches by doing a little hands-on writing based on observation.

Noir and hard-boiled fiction seem to be in Jeri Westerson’s blood. She was born and bred on the mean streets of Los Angeles, inhaling smog and enduring earthquakes. She took all that gritty edginess and plunked it into the Middle Ages, creating the newest hard-boiled detective, Crispin Guest; disgraced knight turned PI, solving crimes on the mean streets of fourteenth century London in her debut Medieval Noir, VEIL OF LIES. Jeri's debut novel was recently nominated for a Macavity Award for historical mystery and a Shamus Award for Best First PI Novel.

The Boston Globe called her detective, “A medieval Sam Spade, a tough guy who operates according to his own moral compass and observes with detached humor...this book is pure fun.” Booklist said, “...this authentically detailed medieval mystery has an intriguingly dark edge.” Library Journal gave it a starred review: “...Westerson's mystery debut is a brilliant tale of survival in a hostile environment, where anything can lead to death...Highly recommended.” Historical Novel Society Review made it an Editor’s Choice title: “...To say Veil of Lies is a remarkable novel doesn’t do the book justice. Just when the plot seems set on a fixed course, the author deftly arranges another neat surprise and keeps the pages turning...

New Age Talk: Unfinished Evolution – A New Age Call to Arms

Friday, November 20, 7 pm: With the worst economy since the Great Depression, constant global conflicts, planetary warming and continued worldwide poverty, it’s clear that a new direction is needed. Novelist and screenwriter, Teena Booth, and the author of UNFINISHED EVOLUTION, will discuss the importance of reviving the New Age in an effort to save the world during this time of anxiety over economic recession, global conflicts, and environmental damage. Teena will encourage attendees to participate in “circle” so that others can speak as well. We will also have a table set up where people can write their own New Age mantra on posterboard.

UNFINISHED EVOLUTION, by Phoenix author Teena Booth, is a call to the scattered “spiritual but not religious” community to literally save the world by joining together under a common New Age identity. The book explores the rise and fall of the New Age movement in popular culture, examines what spiritual progressives lost when the movement receded, and asks them to consider what they might gain personally and collectively by reviving the movement. Covering all aspects of the movement—from its spirituality and philosophy to its arts and politics—the book encourages solitary spiritual seekers to reach out to each other and create a revitalized New Age community with the power to help us all grow in our unfinished spiritual evolution.

Teena is the author of the young adult novel, FALLING FROM FIRE, and TV movies for Lifetime and Hallmark networks. She also is the creator of NEW AGE PRIDE.
